Guidelines

Galah is a print magazine about regional Australia.

We look for a mix of stories in each issue – news features, opinion pieces, profiles about artists and gardeners, photo essays, beautiful houses and sheds and shacks that are distinctly Australian – all with a regional Australian focus.

We want Galah to feel like a hybrid of old-school National-Geographics and the weekend newspaper magazines, with a bit of World of Interiors thrown in the mix.

Each issue will publish:

  • A number of news features related to the issue’s theme
  • A house story
  • A number of artist profiles, including painters, sculptors, photographers, writers
  • A number of opinion and first-person pieces
  • A photographic essay
  • Art Scene: a selection of current favourite artworks in regional Australia
  • A Meet the Producer section
  • A profile about a garden or gardener

Please have a look at a past issue of Galah so you understand the Galah aesthetic. Both photographic and written submissions are welcome, either first person accounts or third person articles, anywhere from 500-1200 words. Photographic submissions can be individual photos, series or photo essays.

For writers new to Galah, we ask that you submit your article in full before we decide to run it or not. Once we have established a working relationship, we can go off pitches. Please also be aware that our editing process is rigorous. If you're not open to your work being edited, don't submit.
